SPG
FMCS: You’ve been working together since 2003, how did you meet? Tell us a bit about your past and your roots?
Silicon Pumpgun: We met in Vienna, during the summer. Barca just finished a tour with her former band, and I produced some tracks in the studio with the need for female vocals and I booked her for a festival.
To be honest, I didn’t like her that much at the beginning. She seemed to be so superficially arrogant, and she had very sharp shoes. Today I laugh when someone feels like this because she’s the most lovely girl I know.
FMCS: How come you decided to call yourself Silicon Pumpgun?
Silicon Pumpgun: It started with Silicone Pumpgun – electronic power, energy. WUMM! – We developed our style and worked very hard to articulate our sense of doing POP.
What we became and what we are now is more SPG than “Silicon Pumpgun” and SPG seems to mean something different extended: Soft Porno Gangsta, or She Poos Great, etc… It’s a game, and it’s just a name. What I like best is “Soli Plebi Gloria” – which means: “Just to the honour of the people.” This will also be the title of our album - you are the first to know this!
FMCS: Where do you get your ideas for new productions?
Silicon Pumpgun: Working on sounds, loops, lines – the usual way, I think.
But here are some true stories: One of our latest tracks was based on a sound I heard watching the Superbowl (wanted to see the halftime entertainment but fell asleep). The bodies and armours crashed together (Callrider:I’m not into football, I’m European, so this was kind of a new sound-experience for me). I ran to get my mobile to record an idea of a beat (title: “Remember”). Another song was produced because of a very concrete picture from a dream in my head when I woke up: A bass, fingers on it and a line: tam-tam-tada-tamtamtam (“Hop on Hop off”). But it’s not always this exciting
Barca is perfect in giving ideas and lines. Her fills and improvisations are very often the template for instrumental lines and “acoustic signs” I try to find a way into her heart and soul, when she shows me her ideas.
FMCS: Describe your style.
Silicon Pumpgun: Hip Pop, New Soul
FMCS: What was the coolest moment of your career so far?
Silicon Pumpgun: We both recognized at the same time, that SPG is gonna be special. Nothing can top the feeling of a connected passion.
FMCS: You guys are based in Vienna, tell us more about the scene there.
Silicon Pumpgun: I don’t know and I don’t really care. I don’t even listen to the local radio.
FMCS: What are your plans for 2007?
Silicon Pumpgun: 2007 is definitely the year to play live a lot. We’ll boost our live set and rock through the halls of fame. In summer it’s time for our new album. To tease it, we’ll send a Super-Single into the world, and two well known artists will contribute a remix. Go, listen and enjoy! From us to you!
FMCS: What keeps you busy off stage?
Silicon Pumpgun: Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream!
