Monsieur G
We have been huge fans of Monsieur G for a while now we just love his style. Anyway after our pathetic attempts at trying to be chic and conduct the interview in French we quickly decided this was a bad idea and packed away Babel fish after unknowingly asking Monsieur G ‘Me brown graphic cow it like it????’ (So we reverted back to ‘default-glish’ for the remainder of the interview).

FMCS: Bonjour Monsieur G Comment ça va?
G: Très bien merci.
FMCS: Where are you now?
G: I live in Nantes. A very cool and calm city, on the French Atlantic coast.
My references are here and even if I worked in Paris at the beginning, I quickly came back to Nantes cause life is quieter here.
FMCS: We love your design work. Tell us a little about your identity and gorgeous style and how it all started?
G: Well, I’m a French graphic designer and I’m 25. I always draw and paint so after college I started studying graphic design in an art school for 4 years.
After I met Phil Caubit from Tyler magazine and I began working for the press. At the same time I worked for Urban Act Street wear in Paris. Then, I moved back to Nantes where I worked for clothing companies like Christian Lacroix Junior or Escada Junior. I’m officially a freelancer since 2 years.
I consider myself more like an illustrator than a real graphic designer and I try not to have one personal style. I try to experiment different things even if it’s mostly urban and hip-hop, I’d like to evaluate to something different.
That’s why I try to work for different stuff like textile or press because it’s another way of thinking, so another way for creation.
FMCS: With being French do you have a certain way with women?
G: I brush my teeth, try to have a fresh haircut, and smile.
FMCS: Do you listen to music when you create? If so what have you got on the tape deck?
G: I always listen to music when I create. It’s really important for me.
This is a sample of the music I use to listen. A Tribe Called Quest, Portishead, Buck 65, The roots (the old ones !), Gonzales, Jay-Jay johanson, Pete Rock, Steve Coleman, Slum Village (Fantastic volume2), Rjd2, Erik Truffaz, Troublemakers, Beastie boys, The Herbalizer, Busta Rhymes (the coming), Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Roy Hargrove, Talib Kweli (reflection eternal), Mos def, Common, Prefuse 73, Cinematic Orchestra, Youngblood brass band, Dj Cam, Dj Krush, Dj logic, Sound providers, Kankick, Basic Vocab, Stevie wonder, Tricky, Serge Gainsbourg, Dj shadow, Company Flow, Jurassic 5, The procussions, Ohmega Watts, Rick James, Tool, Helmet, Downset, RATM, Radiohead, Mr oizo, Hot Chip, Tommy Guerrero, Tower of Power, Boards of Canada etc…
FMCS: What/who inspires you?
G: Music inspires me a lot as you can see. It can gives you different moods and thoughts which can help you for the creation.
I’m also fascinated by painters like G.KLIMT, MIRO or the BAUHAUS movement (KANDINSKY !!!) which was a real avant-garde movement in typography, forms and colors.
Christian Lacroix inspired me a lot when I worked for his brand. For me, he’s a real genius. I’m also a big fan of Antoine+Manuel 2 crazy French graphic designers!
Finally, I often watch CD covers in music stores cause I think it reveals the tendency in graphic design.
FMCS: Are you an animal lover? And if so…in which way do you love animals?
G: I’ll never make love with any animals in this world but I have a cat called cha-cha.
He’s very cute and he’s a good friend.
FMCS: Do you exhibit?
G: Not for the moment but I keep thinking that one day I’ll have the opportunity to do it.
I think I don’t have the maturity yet and I don’t want to exhibit if I don’t have a sincere approach in my work.
FMCS: What’s cool in your country right now apart from you?
G: Food, wine, cities, sea and plenty of artists who make me think that I have a lot of work to be at their level!!!
FMCS: Do you ever wear white pants?
G: I was born to wear white pants!!! It’s my Saturday night pant for sure!
FMCS: What do you want your creative talents to take you?
G: Constantly work for new and exciting projects, meet with various people and give the best of myself. My big dream among other things would be making the design of a skate-deck.
FMCS: What do snails taste like?
G: When it’s well cooked, it’s really good! You must try them!!! Sincerely, it’s been too long time, I can’t remember the taste!
FMCS: Any shout outs?
G: My girlfriend Fanfan, family, friends.
Special Thanks to Phil Caubit from Tyler magazine, Olivier Deniaud for helping me to make my website and Jerôme Rivron for his photos.
Special shout out to Eno Kruger, Atomike studio, Level art, Mamie Denise, Hutchinson, Hocus Pocus & C2C, Scopic.
FMCS: Merci Monsieur G. Stay cool
