FMCS: Hi Luke what’s up?
Luke: I’ve been super busy. I have been developing artwork, animations and skateboard decks. I am also working on some other international projects as well as developing a couple of Flash animated series for television.
FMCS: How’s life in San Francisco at the moment?
Luke: San Francisco is awesome! It has a huge underground art and culture scene and I have been really fortunate to hook up with some of the local artists. There are plenty of cool things to do in San Francisco.

FMCS: Do you make it back to Australia frequently?
Luke: I haven’t been back for a while. I am holding an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia in December 2006 and April 2007 so I will definitely try to get home then.
FMCS: Introduce your self to our readers tell them a little about Luke!
Luke: G’day! I’m Luke and I’m a workaholic….
Being delirious from a lack of sleep can be fantastic for creativity. I pretty much spend most of my time on illustrations, animations and music.
To be able to work all day on my own stuff and share it with others is cool.

FMCS: Tell us about the name for your site ‘SKAFFS’ where did this come from?
Luke: As with most creative ideas, the word “SKAFFS” came to me at 4am one morning and I have run with it ever since. It wasn’t until a year ago when I was browsing the web that I found a definition for SKAFFS; to “disown, trade or discard something of great personal value, for drugs, money and sex”.
So it now seems appropriate that I have ‘skaffed’ from Melbourne, Australia to California, US in pursuit of… well… “drugs, money and sex”???.

FMCS: We really dig your illustrations. How do your ideas evolve? They are certainly unique?
Luke: Thanks. My designs are an interpretation of the oddities of past experiences and every day life. I never know when I am going to be inspired and so because of that I carry around a sketchpad at all times. Many of my quirky characters are those that I first thought up when I was a kid.
My friends have always joked about the scar on my forehead saying that the head injury I sustained as a kid is the reason for the bizarre ideas I come up with. Peculiarly enough, I came across a study put forward by an American University who linked a bump to the right side of the head to abnormal creativity…. (chuckle)

FMCS: The skateboard graphics in your portfolio are great do you skate yourself?
Luke: Thanks. I have always been into skateboarding and blading, however, nowadays I don’t find much time for it. Skateboard designs are something I have always wanted to do. It’s just a bonus that a company approached me to put this into action.
FMCS: Do you experiment a lot with colour in the initial phases of your concept work? or does the idea come straight with a set colour palette? We ask because all your work displays an acute understanding of light display and colour impact!
Luke: My concepts always start off as black and white pen sketch. I always have an idea of how I want the piece to look, but, usually there is a lot of experimenting and playing around with colours. The colours are really important to me as they determine the emotion one can experience from viewing my art.

FMCS: Are you exhibiting at the moment or in the near future? Where can we catch Luke?
Luke: I currently have a solo exhibition until the end of the month at the Super7 Gallery in San Francisco which has been a lot of fun.
I’m also in the process of preparing for an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia in December 2006 and April 2007. Be sure to check out www.skaffs.com for further details in the future.

FMCS: Any Feldman news? What are you currently working on? And what is due from you in the future?
Luke: For sure. I’m currently working on new art and finishing pieces for the Melbourne exhibition. I’m enjoying the opportunities to work with various companies around the world and I’m just having fun working on some collaborations with some international designers. I’m also looking into developing a line of vinyl and plush toys.
Luke: Thanks go out to Miss Jane for trying to keep my illustrations the right way up.
FMCS: Thanks and best wishes for the future Luke.
Luke: Thank you.
