Jules David Design
This week we turn the spotlight on Jules David Design founded in 2005 by Julien Rademaker. Jules David focusses on Identity Design in the broadest sense of the word, we think the words savvy and smart say it all though. Let’s see what Julien has to say about things…

FMCS: Julien how’s it hanging?
Pretty busy here, a lot of work needs to be finished before I leave for Bali.

FMCS: Julien tell us a little about yourself, and how you arrived at where you are at today?
I always knew I wanted to go to the Art Academy, and so I did. After that I worked for a design company called ‘Sin’ in The Hague (Netherlands) for five years. There I mostly worked on Identity design. Out of frustration of not being able to work with the people I wanted to work for and with, I started my own company Jules David Design in 2005.
The official line goes like: Jules David is an Amsterdam/The Hague based graphic designer. After graduating from the Academy of Royal Arts in 2000, he worked five years as a designer for a small design agency, working mostly on Identity Design.
Out of frustration of not being able to work with the people he wanted to work for and with, he started his own company Jules David Design in 2005. He now works for clients such as: Red Bull, Soul Media, Pauze Media, Shimano and the Knoxville Voice.
But more importantly there’s also time to work on his own projects. He does that together with his partner in crime Maartje van Nimwegen under the name Jules Francoise.
Their first project was the very well received ‘Butterflies in your tummie’ sweater. A huge success on the Amsterdam scene. Watch out for new projects that will put a smile on your face.

FMCS: Please tell us a little bit about Jules David Design, your plans and intentions?
Well I guess I just want to work for some interesting clients and in the meantime develop some of my own ideas. What I’m doing right now with a friend Maartje van Nimwegen, is what I’m really into.
We (JulesFrançoise) just finished our second project, the Rock, Paper, Scissor T-shirts. I think they turned out really cool. Also I’m working on some other project with a couple of friends.
I have so many interesting and creative friends, I would love too work together with them more often!

FMCS: What’s the big deal with lines and colors anyway?
Big deal?
FMCS: Jules why do we have armpits?
So that we can stink at stuff!

FMCS: Win 10 Euros ‘Es mīlu soft roku’ .is the Latvian for ‘I love soft rock’…but what is the Latvian for ‘My rims need cleaning’?
I have no idea, what I do know though is that Riga is supposed to be the party capital of the world, so maybe I should be learning a couple of words…
FMCS: In the films Superman never bangs Lois Lane and it’s not as if the opportunity is not there! Why do you think this is?
I heard he tried to bang a horse once, but that didn’t really work out, so I guess he just gave up on banging after that.

FMCS: Have you eaten an egg? If so what does this taste like?
Like chicken. Or does the chicken taste like egg? I don’t remember…
FMCS: Have you ever worn white trousers?
Never… Really!

FMCS: We love ‘A world of shoes’ please tell us a little about this project.
I’m really into sneakers and I always wanted to do something with that. So finally this year I had some time to work out some ideas I had. I think the shoes I used to wear when I was a kid playing basketball every single day, where the most beautiful shoes ever period.
The Flight 89, the Jordan 4,5,6. I think Tinker Hatfield is the best shoe designer ever. I mean I still wear the same shoes after 16/17 years and I still love them! Well anyway, I used a lot of shoes from that period in those designs. I would really love to show them somewhere on an exhibition, print them really large.
But the opportunity hasn’t arisen yet, but who knows some time in the future. Woody, from the sneakerfreaker magazine called me, and wanted to print them in the next issue of the magazine. So that’s what’s going to happen, I’m really looking forward to that, he also had some other ideas with the prints, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

FMCS: Any holidays booked this year?
Yeah man, next week, I’m going for Hong Kong and than to Bali, Indonesia to visit my brother who’s been there from January. Staying there for a month!!
FMCS: Any shout outs?
My girl Marloes, and of course Françoise! Oh and my brother, see you soon man!

FMCS: Thanks for the interview and all the best!
Thank you! Cheers.
