Josh Cochran
Beautiful illustrations, and such a nice guy. A self proclaimed ‘citizen of the world’, Josh spent his youth in Taiwan, indoors drawing and reading mystery novels.
He went to school for Illustration at the Art Center College of Design. Currently, Josh lives in Los Angeles and works out of a studio space in nearby Koreatown. He also has a small dog named Cody.
FMCS: Hi Josh how’s it hanging today? To the left or to the right?
Josh: I’m not sure my eyes are still bleary from lack of sleep.
FMCS: Tell us a little bit about yourself Where are you living currently?
Josh: I currently live in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles (with a ton of actors), and work in a studio near Koreatown.
FMCS: Do you know Dave? You know Dave right? Lives down in Koreatown! Everybody knows him…he knows you…he says you dated his sister is this true?
Josh: Strangely enough there’s a Dave that lives right next door to my studio. With this crazy pimped out apartment on top of a 99 cent store. Haven’t heard anything about his sister though.
FMCS: You know she is pregnant now don’t you??
Josh: This interview has already taken a turn for the worse…
FMCS: Well that seems like a sensitive issue…lets change the subject! Let’s talk about your work for a moment! Tell us a little bit about this…How long have you been illustrating? How did you get into this profession?
Josh: I’ve been illustrating for a little over a year. Got my first big break from Steve Heller at the New York Times Book Review. He gave me a lot of steady work that helped shape my early portfolio. I also took a trip to New York right after school got out and shopped my book around and got some work from that.
FMCS: Great use of color and form, what’s your process of working from ideas generation to finished article?
Josh: I doodle a lot and procrastinate. Actually I try to read the story immediately and then think about other things before writing out ideas and sketching. I try to read a lot of books, watch a lot of movies, and run around outside. Everything sort of contributes to my ideas and overall creativity. Though, to be honest I think there’s something to be said about coffee generating good ideas. Maybe I read that somewhere.
FMCS: How long does it usually take you to get to 3rd base?
Josh: Quite a while since I’m super out of shape these days.
FMCS: What’s hot in LA right now?
Josh: Plastic surgery, being a vegan, and driving a hybrid. Art wise? I think crystals, lasers beams, deer, and octopus.
FMCS: Do you still get the flashbacks or is everything okay now?
Josh: Everything is okay for the moment. Unless I’m eating crazy spicy foods.
FMCS: Favorite footwear at the moment?
Josh: I just got these rad sandals from Rainbow
FMCS: Tell us a little about the UNO Studio?
Josh: It’s a studio/gallery that some of us started while we were in school. Comprised of an environmental designer, a few graphic designers, and myself. We put on art shows and sell zines, shirts and other merchandise that our friends make.
Since school has gotten out it’s really switched to being more of a studio. I silkscreen my prints here and have all my computer and drawing stuff laying around. Oh, and my dogs hang out here during the day.
FMCS: Who’s work are you rating at the moment? Who flips your switch?
Josh: Jacob Magraw, Taylor Mckimens, Neo Rausch and Jason Jägel
FMCS: Thanks for answering our nosey questions
Josh: No, thank YOU!
FMCS: All the best!
