Gianluca Ciufoli
Meet the charming Mr. Ciufoli. Gianluca to be precise is an illustrator of remarkable talent and the portfolio to prove it. Having commissions from Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson and penning design/illustration for periodicals like il Manifesto and Clone Mag can’t be a bad thing.

FMCS: Hi Gianluca how’s things?
All things considered I’m fine!
FMCS: Gianluca tell the FMCS readers about your self and don’t be shy now! (Ladies are reading this).
The first thing that comes into my mind is that… I am shy!
Joking apart, I’m a simple and quiet boy, I’m 28 years old and I live in Rome, in Italy. I love to go out when the weather is fine and take a walk with my dog or my companion.
FMCS: Why illustration? Why not for example bus driving or badger baiting as a profession?
Because that’s the thing I do best and the only one activity that calms down my permanent anxiety.
FMCS: What’s with the small bird on your site and in your illustrations?
There was a time, some years ago, when I wanted to leave the drawing world once and for all. Things were going badly and I didn’t know what to do.
I remember in that period I was always outside, on the meadows, in the wood, in the parks, to the seaside. I felt the nature was some way strengthening me, making me be born again. The small bird is the symbol of my soul, it is the springtime, the wood, the meadows that helped me out. It is my gratitude to life itself.
FMCS: You mention on your site you combine graphics with tattoo art can you explain this please?
You know, in my country (Italy) it is almost impossible to live by drawing alone. For a certain period I went through graphic design first and then to tattooing later.
But to be honest, at present I think there cannot be found any trace of those periods in my current works.
FMCS: How do you kick back and relax? Bottle of Whiskey, Fat kebab and a prostitute… or is that just for breakfast?
Ahhahahah! what a wonderful question! Well, sometimes to get out with some friend of mine and have a beer or play Frisbee, that is enough. Some other times instead, I relax in bed, with either a book, or a movie or good sex.
FMCS: What inspires you right now?
Colors and lines. The subjects are often only pretexts for trying new creative situations. Lately for example I really enjoy coloring with Pantone on waxed paper: the effect is amazing!
FMCS: Does music influence your art and if so what type?
Well, I guess it does. Even if in the preliminary stages of drawing I prefer silence, I usually listen to electronic music, such as Autechre, Amon Tobin, Squarepusher, Lali Puna and Boards of Canada.
FMCS: Ever tried Pizza? We hear this is a delicacy in Italy could you explain to us why it is so sought after?
Of course I did! My mum is used to make it every Sunday and we live it up!
I guess in Italy Pizza is an appreciated course because of its capability to contain in itself both a first and a second course, but much more light and within everybody’s means.
Usually exported pizza is the typical kind of Naples, its native town. In other areas of the country you can find it much thinner and less seasoned. But, this little difference aside, its flavor is universal.
FMCS: What are you working on right now?
I’m working on my style. I’m searching for a good balance between naturalness and technique, without going too far. There’s much to find out.
FMCS: Your top 5 sites?
I don’t really know of any amazing sites…
FMCS: Thanks for the interview Gianluca and all the best for the future!
Thank you for the interest. Let me know if you’re going to pass through Rome: we will go and have beer and Italian style pizza!
