DEKOR

DEKOR is the frighteningly fantastic Nicolas Tual illustrator and designer extraordinaire from Lille in France. If you don’t know this cat then you should. His work is amazing and always a pure delight to cast your eyes over.

Bold graphics with twisted faces, great use of colour and detail all rolled into fabulous bundles of visual viciousness.

FMCS: Hey Dekor how’s things man?

DEKOR: I feel good, the sun is shining and that’s what the holidays are all about!

dekor5.jpg

FMCS: Tell us a little about your self and where you are from, how you came to be there and how you decided to spend all your energies on making fine graphics?

DEKOR: I was born in Lille in 1985, so I’m 21 years old. But Dekor is 5 years old, it was my street-artist nickname… I used to paste some characters or some posters in the street, then I decided to go to art school and make graphic design my full time job.

FMCS: What’s the thoughts on your style, it’s defiantly unique and very, very good! Did this style originate by itself or a conscious move inspired by other artists or design movements?

DEKOR: Inspiration is everywhere! TV, books, music, friends… I try to eat a lot of different things to expand my style and my world. Fortunately, I love to draw monsters and strange things with flash colors, and it seems to be in fashion right now, but I’m trying to explore different ways of work to adapt my style to future demand.

FMCS: What’s the most enjoyable aspect of what you doing right now in the design and illustration environment?

DEKOR: I think that graphic design is very great cause you can meet a lot of interesting people and I feel very lucky that my passion is my job!

dekor9.jpg

FMCS: Do you work full time on your design and illustrations or do you have other projects that support what you are doing?

DEKOR: Yes, I spend a lot of time on my illustrations, but I am always trying to look for other interesting projects… I’m always running after doing something new and exciting.

FMCS: How is life in Lille? Is there a good creative vibe there at the moment? We know that SKWAK is from that way do you guys hang around together, do you know him and are there others we should look out for?

DEKOR: Life in Lille is easy! 1 hour from Paris, London and Bruxelles, that makes it almost the European center. There is a load of guys and girls who have a real talent in this town, that’s really inspiring for me. Yes Lille is a little city, so we know each other. I meet Skwak sometimes in the street or during exhibitions, that’s a cool guy… You should talk to my buddy Koa too, that’s a guy with a great energy!

FMCS: What are your plans for the immediate future regarding your design and illustrations, and the whole DEKOR project?

DEKOR: I’m in love with silk screen printing, I really would like to control this amazing technic. I’m planning to make a lot of great posters and maybe my own silk screened underground book. I met Elzo Durt two days ago in Brussels and his work is simply amazing, it gave me the desire to work on projects with him! I would love to make an exhibition in a foreign country too, that’s important to me to see other ways of life. Maybe this summer when I’ll be in Toronto… Other things are coming this year with Toy2r and Logo / Sofa so watch out!

dekor10.jpg

FMCS: In which environment do you think your work is best displayed?

DEKOR: That’s a really good and actually quite difficult question guys… I love the big blank walls of a gallery, but seeing my work on sand shoes or a skateboard is very nice too!

FMCS: Thanks for the short ‘getting to know you session’. Any shout outs to your crew before we depart?

DEKOR: Hey guys, what about a drink in London together?

FMCS: You bet! Thanks DEKOR and best of luck with the future!

DEKOR: Thanks FMCS, it was nice to chat with you…
