Better than Times Square!

The million dollar homepage was a great idea. And it worked! Entrepreneur and Englishman Alex Tew is now a self made dollar millionaire, and the next few years for him should be an easy cruise of interviews and lectures which should keep the bank balance nicely topped up. Just shows you that a smart idea in this day and age still works well.

And also that smart ideas can be reproduced by somebody else to cash in on. For instance, the Sandberg Institute (above).

On the facade of the Sandberg you can buy tiles (29×35cm) starting at 19.99 EUR for 1 whole month in 2006 to display your advertising. An Interesting idea to attach what worked so well on the net to a building exterior, which after all is the traditional advertising environment.

Is the Sanberg Institute really not taking into account the underlying mechanics of why the million dollar homepage concept worked so well on the web? Maybe to understand that you have to understand the principles of viral marketing (word of mouth), the speed and dissemination of information on the internet, and adding to that the Internets ability to propagate, and make a success of new ideas faster than releasing them in the traditional channels.

Let’s see what happens with this project!

The ChumScrubber

Directed by Arie Posin, The Chumscrubber is a darkly satiric story about life falling apart in the midst of a seemingly idyllic suburbia.

This ‘off the wall’ story kicks off when the main character Dean Stiffle discovers the corpse of his friend, Troy. He doesn’t bother telling any of the adults because he knows they won’t care. And why should they, they are to self consumed and smacked up on happy pills to get them through their over whelming surreal suburban day.

As it turns out, before Troy died he owed the school dealer Billy a large amount of pills. Billy decides that Dean, who lives next door to Troy’s mother, is the best person to get the pills from wherever Troy hid them, so he decides to kidnap Dean’s younger brother, Charlie, to force him to get them for him. But Billy kidnaps the wrong boy, and instead gets the son of a local policeman.

The story is full of surprises, interesting characters, strong emotions, and bizarre twists. You also get treated to watching Glenn Close and Ralph Fiennes show their talent by underplaying their roles.

The rather strange title of the film refers to a popular video game omnipresent in the teenager’s lives, in which a post-apocalyptic hero (The Chumscrubber) carries his severed head in his hand as he fights the forces of evil.
